FRUITY BEAUTY

It may be hard to believe, but items found in your kitchen can soothe, heal and invigorate your body. We know to eat fruits because they contain valuable vitamins and minerals; it makes sense that these same properties can benefit your skin and hair. Because you are getting a dose of these vitamins in their most pure form, they will work quickly. And because the vitamins are totally natural, with no additives, they won't irritate the skin.

Fruit Masks For Skin
You can turn any fruit into a quick facial mask by blending it with yogurt or honey. Yogurt is a better choice for people with oily skin while those with dry skin should choose honey. Obviously, using yogurt will result in a creamier mask while a honey and fruit mixture will be stickier.

Fruit Conditioning For Hair
You can also use the fruits to condition your hair by blending them with your favorite conditioner, letting the mixture sit on your head for about 10 minutes, and then blasting it with a hair dryer. For even deeper conditioning, mix the fruits with an essential oil such as almond oil.

Fruits That Matter

  • Banana: A moisturizing powerhouse.

  • Lemon: A natural purifier, astringent and cleanser; great for oily skin and removing product build-up from hair.

  • Apple: Contains malic acid, a potent exfoliator for skin; also removes product build-up from hair

  • Pineapple: A more gentle exfoliant

  • Strawberry: Has enzymes that soften skin

Flamberg has three specific home remedies for skin and hair based on treatments developed and used in spas across the country.

    To Banish Dry Skin
    Lime and Ginger Salt Scrub

Mix: 1 tsp sea salt, 1 tsp camellia oil, 1 grated lime rind, and 1 tsp shredded ginger.

Scrub mixture on wet skin in gentle, circular motions, concentrating on elbows, knees, backs of shoulders and heels.

Why it works: Ginger revs up circulation, lime cleanses and purifies, camellia oil softens.

*Camellia is a flower and you can buy the oil at most health food stores.

    To Calm A Breakout

After cleansing, apply a warm towel to your face. The heat softens the debris in clogged pores and helps draw out impurities.

Mix: 2 tsp crushed oatmeal, 1 tsp honey, 1 tsp plain yogurt, 2 tsp diced orange.
Use the mixture to lightly exfoliate skin.

Rinse and apply a mask of: 1 mashed papaya (use a blender or potato masher) and 1 tsp plain yogurt.
Leave on for 10 minutes, rinse and moisturize.

Why the exfoliant works: Orange is an astringent and honey and yogurt moisturize while acting as a soothing anti-irritant.

Why the mask works: Papaya contains enzymes that dissolve and lift away dead skin cells.

The entire treatment will help prevent further breakouts by dislodging dirt and thoroughly cleansing the skin, allowing healthy new skin to shine through.

    To Stimulate Your Scalp
Whip half an avocado with 1 tsp honey and 2 tsp heavy cream in a blender. Work through hair and rub into scalp. Leave on for 15 minutes and rinse.

Why it works: Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. The honey helps return the scalp to a neutral pH balance while the avocado, which is rich in monosaturated fats, vitamins and minerals, softens hair.

FITNES S AND EXERCISE TIPS AND TRICKS

As we age, our bodies lose muscle tissue and our metabolism slows down. Exercise is the best way to get physically fit and lose weight. Starting an exercise regimen at any age is extremely beneficial and can add years to your life. Working out takes discipline and should not be painful. "No pain, no gain" is just a myth and is not good advice to follow. Exercise should make you feel healthy and fit, not looking for the ibuprofen and ice packs.
Experts advise that 20 to 30 minutes of aerobic activity at least three times a week is beneficial for both men and women. Select the best plan that is favorable to your lifestyle, whether it is at home or a fitness club. Opt for a form of exercise you will enjoy the most and start out slowly, increasing your activity and work out-time gradually. Consider adding basic weight training to build muscles, burn calories, and control body fat.

    • You will probably need a different shade for each season. Don't use the same one all year long. Blending colors may be the only way to get a perfect match.
    • Apply foundation on your eyelids, lips and into your neck for a more natural look. This also is a good setting for eye shadow and lipstick and helps it stay on longer.
    • For clear complexions, sometimes all you need is a tinted moisturizer for a natural look.
    • Liquid foundation is usually water based and is best for dry skin. Use a sponge or your fingers to blend from the nose, out.
    • Liquid foundation can settle and separate, so always shake it before use.
    • Apply loose translucent powder with a large cosmetics brush to set your foundation and keep it from running in hot and humid weather.
    • For dry skin, apply a light moisturizer before your foundation.
    • Powder foundation is ideal for oily skin and will help reduce shine.
    • Use a concealer for those nasty blemishes and pat lightly with pressed powder.
    • If your foundation is too heavy, add a couple drops of moisturizer to thin.
    • After application, go outside or near a window to check for blunders.

    Lips

    • Keep lips moisturized at night with lip balm or petroleum jelly.
    • Apply pressed powder on and around your lips if your lipstick has a tendency to "bleed."

    • If you're fair-skinned, avoid dark colors that appear too harsh.
    • To avoid getting lipstick on your teeth, run your finger through the middle of your lips and pull it back out after application. The excess will come off on your finger, not your teeth.

    • Use only mousses and hair gels without alcohol to avoid a drying affect.
    • Use shampoo that is PH balanced and designed for your hair type.
    • Switch shampoo brands often to prevent product build-up.
    • Use a clarifying shampoo when you need to remove hair spray and gel build up.
    • Don't use hot water when shampooing or rinsing your hair.
    • For static electricity in the Winter, try running a fabric softener sheet through your hair for better control.
    • Don't believe that theory about brushing your hair 100 strokes every day. That will only cause damage and split ends.
    • Don't wash your hair every day if it's dry because shampoo and heat appliances will make it brittle. Who's going to know?
    • Use a cool setting on your blow dryer. This will take longer, but it will make your hair more shiny and manageable.
    • If your hair is oily and you don't have time for a wash, rub a dab of baby powder through it. This works better for blonde hair.

    • Care for your hair as you do your skin. Healthy hair is much more attractive than dull, lifeless hair.

    HOME PEDICURE

    Prepare Your Toenails
Before you begin a home pedicure, you need to remove your old nail polish with polish remover using a cotton ball or swab. Swipe around the edges to ensure the polish is removed completely.
Use clean fingernail clippers to trim your nails straight across. Don't cut them too short, you can then use an emery board or fingernail file to shape your toenails exactly how you want and remove any sharp edges.
    Cuticles
Soak your toes in a basin of warm water (with salts if desired) for about 5-10 minutes to clean your toenails and soften up your cuticles. Cuticle cream or lotion can also help soften your cuticles if you plan on trimming away any access. If you want to push back your cuticles, use an orangewood stick to loosen them and press gently back so they don't cover your nail.
    Painting Your Toenails
You can paint your toenails as you would your fingernails, but you need to keep your toes separated so they don't rub each other. Generally, applying two coats of polish is ideal, allowing them to dry in between.
To add some staying power, apply a clear topcoat and let it dry too before you put any shoes or socks on. For quick touch-ups to your pedicure, you can apply another coat of the same color polish. Don't get too many layers or they'll chip off more easily.

    NATURAL BEAUTY TIPS

    Natural Beauty Tips

Not everyone wants a complete makeover as some like to preserve a more natural appearance. Let's face it, many men are attracted to the low-maintenance, "girl-next-door" look and accomplishing that can be just as challenging as looking model-perfect. So, how do you achieve a desirable look without the heavy use of cosmetics and makeup? Our natural beauty tips will help you do just that, and put you on the path to a beautiful, unaffected, you.

    Practice a Healthy Lifestyle

Natural beauty is akin to an overall healthy appearance. Start with a better lifestyle. Your own attitudes and daily life reflects in how you look to others. Take care of your body and it will take care of you.
Eat a proper, well-balanced diet. Food that's good for your body helps your internal organs function properly and shows on the outside as well. The trick is to read the labels carefully and eat healthy foods with minimal preservatives. Good nutrition is key to your outward appearance and longevity.
The best skin in the world will not overcome a flabby body. Get in good physical shape if you've been slacking off. Set some reasonable fitness goals to get your body fit and trim. Begin with short-term goals and set new ones once they're achieved.

    Skin Care Tips

Water plays a crucial role. For radiant skin, stay hydrated to keep your skin soft and supple. Seal in water externally after a shower by applying lotion to damp skin.
Look for all-natural, organic and herbal recipes for basic skin problems. Whether it's dry skin or blemishes, you can target the areas that need it most, foregoing chemicals that can be irritating to your skin.
As you age, you'll hit some bumps along the way. Care for your skin as you do your most prized possession and you'll see the benefits quickly, as well as years from now.
Don't want leathery skin? Lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by reducing exposure to the sun's dangerous rays. When enjoying outdoor activities, apply a sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 and re-applying when necessary.

    Wear Makeup, Naturally

If you wish to wear makeup, utilize only the best cosmetics brushes and beauty tools to enhance your finest features and cover flaws. This allows you to apply only the amount that is needed while blending in any excess color. Apply a tinted moisturizer or sheer foundation with a damp sponge. Either one will allow your natural skin tone to show through while covering minor imperfections.
Creme or liquid blush blends more naturally than powder. Apply to the apple of your cheeks, outwards, into your hairline to prevent makeup lines.
Don't want to overdo your eyes? You can now enhance your own eyelashes without adding clumps or colors. New, clear mascara is available to separate your lashes and give them luster and shine.

    HOME MANICURE TIPS

    Filing and Buffing Your Fingernails

Before you begin an at-home manicure, Place your metal nail tools in an antiseptic solution for about 15 minutes to kill any bacteria and germs.
    • Remove your old polish before you begin.
    • Never file the nail in a back and forth motion. Instead, go from side to side, in one direction.
    • Your nails should be shaped into oval tips.
    • Buff the surface of the fingernail after filing.
    • Soften your cuticles by soaking in a small bowl of soapy, warm water or cuticle cream.
    • Gently loosen your cuticles with cuticle remover or an orangewood stick.

    Painting and Decorating

Be creative when you give yourself manicures! Add wild colors, decals, and stickers specifically designed for your fingernails. But first, you'll need a good surface to work with.
    • To avoid air bubbles in your polish, don't shake the bottle. Roll it gently in the palm of your hands before applying.
    • Apply your fingernail polish in three strokes, one in the middle and one on each side, taking special care to avoid your skin and cuticles.
    • If you're in a hurry, or plan to redo your nails soon, apply only two coats of polish. Allow the first coat to dry before adding the second coat.
    • For longer staying polish, apply one base coat, two coats of polish, and finish it off with a top coat to prevent chipping.
    • Metallic nail polishes stay on much longer without chipping, but they're much harder to remove.
    • Apply the polish to the edge, underneath the tip of the nail to reinforce the area.
    • When you're finished, clean up any additional polish on your skin and cuticles with a cotton swab dipped in nail polish remover.
    • Let your nails dry completely for about 30 minutes before doing anything, and don't go to bed with wet polish.
    • In a hurry? To harden your nail polish quickly, try running your nails under cold water.
    • If your favorite polish is getting old and thick, add a bit of polish thinner or remover to revive it.

    Manicures: Artificial Nails

Before you begin, it's important to lay down some paper or an old dish towel for a work surface. This will help prevent any glue or nail polish from getting on your table. Have all of your tools handy beforehand.
First, buff the surface of your natural nails. This will clean them and rough them up a bit, allowing the glue to adhere better. Then dry the surface of your nails and apply the artificial nails. Gently rock them back and forth to get out the air bubbles. Press tightly and apply glue just under the tips where there is usually a gap. After the glue dries, file your nails as you normally would and clean off any access glue. Paint as usual.
    • Some nail glue is extremely thin. Be careful, it dries almost instantly.
    • Longer nails are more prone to chipping and breaking.
    • Trim down the nails before you glue them on.
    • When removing artificial nails, soak them in acetone and remove them with a cuticle stick.

    Repair Tips

The sooner you repair a broken fingernail, the less damage there will be. It's best to always have nail clippers and a nail file in your purse and at work for a quick-fix.
    • To remove a polish smudge, dip your finger in nail polish remover and tap lightly.
    • For a chip in your polish, smooth the edges with nail polish remover and polish the bare area sparingly.
    • For a torn nail, clip and file. For a big break, file off the rough edges and apply glue to the surface of your nail. Hold your nail in place while it dries. Buff out to smooth.

    Beauty Tips for Teens

    Skin Care Tips

Teenagers have different skin care and makeup needs than women. At what age should a teen begin a skin care regimen? Skin care should actually start when they are preteens, as early as the age of 10 or 11. Hormones start to kick in and blemishes may begin to appear.
As you mature, your skin care needs will change, as your skin does. Pay special attention to what products you are using and if there are any undesirable affects taking place. What makes your skin look radiant one month may cause blemishes and break-outs the next.
    Moisturizer
At an early age, a light moisturizer may be called for, but do not use heavy creams made for dry skin. Choose a product that is formulated for light skin care maintenance that does not block your pores. A heavy moisturizer will probably wreak havoc and cause pimples. Try using a light moisturizer only once a day, before bedtime. Any more often than that is probably overdoing it. For combination skin, spot-moisturize. Instead of using moisturizer on your entire face, use it only on dry areas and keep it off of your t-zone.
    Pimples and Blemishes
Acne is the #1 skin care concern for teens. Keep your face and hair clean, wash your hands frequently, and keep them away from your face. There are many products available on the market today for acne prevention and cures, and they are much more effective than years ago.
Once you begin experiencing problems, take action to avoid lifetime scarring. You can go to the Blemishes Page to find out how to get rid of pimples, preventative maintenance, and how to reduce the appearance of them once they appear.

    Makeup for Teenagers

Most teenage girls begin wearing light makeup around the ages of 12-13 as they become more aware of their appearance. As a teen, your makeup should look natural and enhance your facial features. Don't overdo it, this will only make you look silly. With a few simple, inexpensive products, you can play up your finest features and look great!
Keep your makeup light for school. You don't need to use it on every facial feature you have! Mix and match to find out what looks best on you. For parties, you may want to add a little more makeup to add some glam. Make sure you blend it in well with your fingers or a cosmetics brush. Check it in bright light when you're finished.
    Foundation
Foundation for teens is not necessary. While it can clog your pores, it will also look overdone. Skip the foundation and use a concealer on your blemishes only. Lightly dust on some loose powder over your entire face to even out your skin tone, control oil, and set the concealer.
    Freckles
Don't try to hide your freckles. You may not appreciate them, but they are part of you. Exposure to sunlight makes freckles darker so avoiding the sun and using a sunscreen will keep them in check. As you get older, they can fade and won't be much of an issue.
    Eye Makeup
You may not be interested in eye shadow until you're a little older. If so, that's great. When you do begin wearing it, keep it light and use any trendy metallics and sparkles sparingly. They can flake off into your eyes and cause irritation. Eye shadow does not have to match your eyes, however, earth tones (tan, brown, gray) are very complimentary to blue, brown and hazel eyes.
When you begin using mascara, brown works best for both blondes and brunettes. Black is probably too harsh, especially in the daytime. If you think brown isn't dark enough, try brownish-black. Waterproof mascara may be necessary for sports and outdoor activities in warm weather. It stays on longer and doesn't run, but it's harder to take off. It's best to keep mascara and all makeup to a minimum and you won't have to worry about undesired smearing.
If you're going to use an eyeliner, a pencil liner looks more natural than liquid liner. Learn to apply it with a steady hand for straight lines, and blot it with a tissue if you get it on too dark.
    Blush
Liquid and stick blush are popular choices for teens because they glide on smoothly and blend in well. Pinks and peaches compliment almost any skin tone. Apply to the apple of your cheeks and blend outwards, towards your hairline.
    Lips
For luscious lips, lip gloss does the trick. If you want to add some color to your lips for a nighttime look, try a lipstick in a sheer color. For extra shine, put the lip gloss on over your lipstick. Always have lip balm handy for chapped lips.

    Beauty Secrets: Tips and Tricks

    Skin and Makeup

Charlize Theron does a switcharoo with her eye shadow. Instead of applying the darker color on her eyelids and the lighter color above, she applies the lighter color on her lid and the darker shade above. This enhances her beautiful blue eyes and adds to her youthful appearance.
Thick foundation and powder makeup falls into pores, fine lines, and wrinkles. Too look younger, use a moisturizer as a base, before your foundation. Apply makeup with a light hand and quality brushes.
The tan ain't always natural. Celebrities often go to salons and have their tans airbrushed on, not only to darken their skin, but to cover up blemishes and flaws.
US Weekly reports that "Desperate Housewives" star, Nicollette Sheridan, goes to L.A.'s Jim Wayne Salon for monthly Super Performance Facial Treatments to help treat her dry and sensitive skin.
Botox is no secret to celebs, but just take a look at some of their faces when they're trying to express themselves. If natural lines don't appear in their forehead and around the eyes, they've probably been Botoxed. Scarier yet, are those reported Botox parties before awards events.
Tyra Banks revealed during one of her shows that drugstore brand makeup works just as well as those pricey bands found in department stores. Hence, it's not always the brand which you choose that's important, it's the technique in which you apply it.
Crisco can be used to remove makeup and moisturize extremely dry areas on your face and body.

    Hair

To look younger, celebrities avoid too short or too long hair. Shoulder length, layered hair is versatile and ideal for more youthful styles.
Don't add hair color to freshly washed hair. Natural oils help protect the scalp and make the hair shaft absorb color more efficiently.
Baby shampoo is gentle. So gentle that is helps preserve hair color and treatments such as perms and straighteners.
Professional stylists know that by setting their blow dryer on a low, cool setting and using a diffuser makes hair less frizzy and easier to achieve the desirable hairstyle.

    Body and Shape

A model's best kept secret is using duct tape around her waist and stomach to trim off extra pounds. Beauty pageant contestants have also done this.
How do celebrities get those white, picture-perfect teeth? If they're not born with them (most aren't,) porcelain veneers are bonded to their teeth to cover up imperfections such as chips, misalignments, and discoloration.
Dentists don't want you to know that you can whiten your teeth at home with a simple solution of peroxide and baking soda.

    EXERCISE MYTHS BUSTED

    • Muscle can turn to fat.

Muscle and fat are two different tissues and cannot convert into the other. Decreased physical activity reduces your muscle tissue and your metabolism.
    • You can spot reduce.

You can't lose weight in any particular place before another. Your weight will first come off from the last place you put it on.
    • You shouldn't eat before you exercise

It doesn't matter when you eat as long as you're comfortable.
    • No pain, no gain.

You don't have to hurt yourself to see the benefits of exercise. Even low intensity workouts can help you lose weight and improve your health.

    BEAUTY MYTHS BUSTED

Beauty myths are often no more than old adages that are handed down to each generation. Some of these misconceptions are centuries old and just plain silly. While logic doesn't seem to play a big factor in beauty myths, they're still abundant. These common beauty myths are pure fiction and deserve to take their place in the "beauty myth hall of shame."
    • Soap is bad for your skin.

Older formulas contained animal fats and vegetable oils. Newer soaps are formulated to be milder and some contain moisturizers that don't dry out your skin. Clean skin is better than dirty skin.
    • Shaving your legs will make your hair grow in thicker.

You have as many hairs as is genetically determined, regardless of whether you shave them. However, shaving can make hairs appear "stubbier" and perhaps thicker.
    • Drinking a lot of water leads to beautiful skin.

While drinking water is necessary for our bodies, too much will only result in bloating and too many trips to the bathroom.
    • Split ends can be repaired.

The only way to rid of split ends is to cut them off and prevent them in the future with good hair care.
    • Dry skin causes wrinkles.

Not true. Most wrinkles are caused from the sun.
    • You can wash acne and pimples away.

Scrubbing too vigorously will increase oil production and only aggravate the condition.
    • The sun clears up blemishes.

While the sun will temporarily dry out pimples, it interferes with healthy skin cells. This can cause a worse breakout a couple days after sun exposure.
    • Stick to one brand and line of products.

This beauty myth was probably put out by cosmetic manufacturers who want to keep customers loyal to their brand.
    • You don't need to use sunscreen on a cloudy day.

The sun's UV rays penetrate clouds and can still damage your skin.
    • Natural ingredients are non-allergenic.

Whether it's a natural or chemical ingredient, if your allergic to it, you'll see a reaction.
    • Chocolate and greasy foods cause acne.

No one food has been proven to cause breakouts. If you find a correlation, quit eating that particular food.
    • You can shrink the pores on your face.

Your pore size is genetically determined. Pores may appear larger by bacteria and dead skin cells. Retin-A and alpa hydroxys are designed to break up these materials and bring the pores back to their original appearance.
    • Rinsing your hair in cold water will make it shiny.

False. Your hair will not shine any more than if you rinsed it in warm water.

    TIPS ON REDUCING LARGE PORES

    Tips on reducing large pores

    • Stop using harsh toners or astringents on the affected areas. Using these products may have a very temporary 'tightening' effect on pores, but it's extremely short-lived. In fact, harsh astringents actually encourage oil glands to over-produce oil, leading to an increase in the size of pores.
    • Avoid putting moisturiser on the area as the skin produces quite enough moisture and oil on its own and doesn't need more.

Makeup tips to hide the appearance of large pores

    • Heavy foundations will draw attention to your large pores. So, stay with a sheer, light and oil free foundation.
    • Apply foundation, concealer, powder and blusher in a downward motion, otherwise you'll accentuate pores by pushing colour up and into them.

REDUCE THE APPEARANCE OF LARGE PORES

Large pores are simply a genetic problem, but you can temporarily reduce large pores by clearing away dirt and debris. Large pores are often an indication of oily skin.
Use one after the other for cleansing and exfoliating the skin.
    SUGAR SCRUB
Ingredients: 1 Tablesoon each of sugar, olive oil and honey.
Wet face, apply scrub by rubbing very gently in a circular motion. Remove with water with hands only.
    EGG WHITE MASK
Mix 2 egg whites with a few drops of lemon juice. Apply on face and leave on for 5-7 minutes, then rinse with hands.

DIY HOME REMEDIES FOR TEETH WHITENING

The majority of tooth whitening techniques are toxic and expensive. Try the following methods, next time you are looking to brighten your smile:
    • Plax or it’s generic equivalent, can be used to whiten teeth. Take a mouthful, and hold it in your mouth, as you brush your teeth. This is not a natural method, but can be quite effective if used a few times a week. Do not use this method too often, as it can cause stripping of the enamel over time.
    • Strawberries can be used to whiten teeth. Take a strawberry, and mash it up. Place some of the substance on top of your toothbrush, and brush teeth well. Rinse and wash out your toothbrush. Mix with a little baking soda, for added scrubbing power. Do not do on a regular basis, as it can strip enamel over time. I freeze strawberries during their season, so that they are available throughout the year.
    • Rhubarb. The natural healer, John Heinerman recommends using rhubarb root powder for not only whitening, but healing a variety of dental diseases and problems with decay. It is also good for gum problems. This is not an easy substance to find, so I tried rhubarb it’s self. I take a stalk of rhubarb, slice it into pieces, and blend it in the blender mixed with a small amount of water. Put a small mouthful of the juice in your mouth, and brush as usual. Be sure NOT TO SWALLOW. Raw rhubarb should not be ingested. This is one of the very best natural tooth whiteners I have found. Be sure to stock up when it is in season, and freeze.
    • Hydrogen Peroxide. Swish mouth with hydrogen peroxide after having brushed teeth. If using food grade, put 3-4 drops in a small amount of water, and swish around. Be sure not to swallow. Do everyday for about a week. This is also a very excellent method.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR DRY SKIN

    • Spray an herbal or floral water mist on your skin throughout the day to replenish lost moisture. Almost all skin types, but particularly dry skin, benefit from lavender. You can purchase lavender water already made, or you can make your own by adding a few drops of essential oil to 4 ounces of distilled water, or by making an infusion of fresh lavender leaves and flowers.
    • Always moisturize your skin after cleansing, and at other times throughout the day, if necessary, to keep it from drying out. Use a liquid moisturizer or facial oil that contains nutrients and other natural ingredients. Do not use solid, waxy moisturizing creams. Wrinkle Treatment Oil and Vitamin A Moisturizing Gel from Derma-E Products are both good for dry age lines caused by the sun and the skin's natural aging.
